Simply written with relatively few characters or plot twists, this book provides and easy to follow and straightforward narrative.My 11 year old son enjoyed it very much when I read it to him at our bedtime ritual. It's not nearly as brilliant as "where the red Fern grows" but I suspect he liked it about as much and it moved a little faster. He enjoyed it more than bridge to Tabitha.Maybe it's more of a 3.5 / 5 but I couldn't bring myself to give it a full 4 stars.

Reep and Allen waste no time in putting the reader into a front row seat for excitement and danger. The potential for sudden, bloody conflict, the formation of both allies and enemies, and the breakneck pace of this historical YA novel are set before 5 pages have been turned. The characters are entirely believable in their vulnerabilities, their bravery, and in the case of some, their capacity for hatred and violence. This is a realistic story of a group of boys gone to war--real war--but it is also a story of loyalty, love, and friendship, and what kind of courage and commitment it takes to, as Jesse Turner might say, "make something of yourself." Highly recommended for middle grade and YA readers who enjoy action-adventure, and an excellent choice for the classroom as a supplement to relevant American History lesson plans.

The Dangerous Summer of Jesse Turner was a good read. I enjoyed the historical insights it provided.

I have read this wonderful book several times. Excellent boys' adventure story about boys who go off to join Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. This is an ideal book for YA boys and history buffs. Top notch entertainment!

This book is excellent, well paced and authentic. I would love to see the author(s) revisit these excellent adventures. Young teens and adults will be transported into another time, I could almost smell the dust in the street, a must read.

I enjoyed this book tremendously! Jesse Turner is a teenager who decides to throw his lot in with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders during his Cuban campaign. Set against the horrors and deprivations of war, Jesse and his new friends face dangers from the enemy as well as closer to home. Reep tells a tense, rollicking tale that stays with the reader long after the last page. Highly recommended.

Great summer read. Highly recommend especially for anyone into history or even if you are not, it is a great read. Loved it>

An interesting piece of history made immediate and exciting for both young readers and adults. This quality of historical fiction is hard to find, especially for young readers. I bought additional copies for my grandchildren.
